FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSBecause Informed Clients Make Confident Choices
At Couro, we believe exceptional quality should be paired with
thoughtful guidance. Below are answers to our most common
client questions about care, quality, and the timeless value of our
natural Brazilian hair-on-hide rugs.
How long will a Couro hides rug last?
Only our full-grain, hair-on-hide rugs are built to last a lifetime with proper care. Thanks to their natural
durability and breathability, many clients enjoy them for 30+ years — far outlasting synthetic or tufted
alternatives.
Do they shed?
No — This is called “Slippage” and is a problem with lower quality hides. Our authentic, premium cowhides
should not shed under normal use. Our proprietary tanning process preserves more fat liquors in our hides
preventing slippage and ensuring beautifully soft and supple hides. Minor shedding may occur in extreme
high-traffic zones or if exposed to sharp edges or heavy rubbing, but with proper care, your Couro hide will
retain its fullness.
Are your hides ethically sourced?
Yes. All Couro hides are a natural byproduct of the meat industry — no animal is ever harvested for its skin.
We believe in full-use sustainability, where no part goes to waste, just like indigenous practices honored
for centuries. We also utilize organic tanning techniques where all liquid effluents in the tanning process is
recycled, then all solid wastes are used as organic fertilizer.
Are they pet-friendly?
Absolutely. Most dogs and cats love lounging on the soft, cool surface. The natural fibers are resilient to
claws, resistant to pet hair, and easy to clean — making them a favorite among our pet-owning clients.
How thick are Couro hide rugs?
Our hides measure approximately 1.6 mm to 2 mm thick — the ideal balance of strength, softness, and
flexibility. This thickness also enhances the natural ripple and drape that gives each rug its luxury feel.
What is the backing made of?
The underside of each Couro hide is natural suede leather — no added materials, coatings, or adhesives.
This natural suede is non-slip on most flooring surfaces, breathable, and safe for hardwood.
Do I need a rug pad?
No. Our cowhides require no rug pad. The natural suede backing grips flooring securely while remaining
breathable.
Can they be used for upholstery or furniture?
Yes. Our full-grain cowhides are frequently used by designers for upholstery, ottomans, wall panels, and
furniture accents. Their tensile strength and unique markings make them a versatile material for luxury
interiors.
How should I clean my hide?
For everyday cleaning, shake the hide outdoors or vacuum in the direction of the hair without the beater
bar. For spills, blot immediately with a soft towel and follow the mild soap and vinegar care method
outlined in our Care & Cleaning Guide.
Do they wrinkle or crease?
Some natural folding may occur in transit. Most creases will settle within a few days. For faster results,
lightly dampen the backside with a cloth, roll the rug tightly, and allow it to dry unrolled. Never iron or
steam. Is it safe for kids and babies?
Yes. Couro hides are free from synthetic chemicals and flame-retardant treatments, making them a safe,
hypoallergenic surface for little ones to crawl, play, or nap on.
What is your shipping and return policy?
We offer free shipping within the U.S. on orders over $199 or flat $9.99 on orders less than $199. If your rug
isn’t a perfect fit, you may return it within 30 days in its original condition. For full details, visit our Shipping
